General Information

Masland Library’s primary mission is to support the academic needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Cairn University. Matriculated alumni of Cairn University areAs a member of the Carroll Library Partnership, we are also open to the public. Visitors to the library have access to many of our materials and services.

General Information

  • Registered alumni, with a valid alumni university ID, can access the library during regular library hours
  • Eating and/or drinking of uncovered beverages is prohibited within the library. Please enjoy your food and uncovered beverages in the cafe before coming into the library building.
  • Cell phone uage, live streaming, video conferencing, etc. needs to be taken outside of the library.
  • Keep personal belongings with you at all times.
  • Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

As of March 1, 2019 alumni of Cairn University can check out general collection books and audio visual materials. An account can be created using your active Cairn email address. If you do not have a Cairn email address, alumni will need to acquire an alumni ID.

Lending rules

  • General collection:
    • Maximum number of books: 5
    • check-out period: 28 days
    • renewals: 1 renewal of 14 days
  • CDs and DVDs:
    • checkout period: 7 days
    • renewals: none
  • We are sorry but, because of high student demand, alumni may not check out the following:
    • Books located in the Juvenile collection
    • Study rooms (during the regular semester)
    • Reserves
    • Chromebooks
    • Charging cables, headphones and other equipment

Using the Masland Library

Masland Library welcomes the community to use the building and resources during visitor hours. Alumni without a valid Cairn alumni ID will be considered a visitor and will need to sign in at the front, with a current photo ID, and adhrer to the posted visitor hours. With a vaild Cairn alumni ID, alumni are welcome to use the library following the regular hours for Cairn community.

Regular Semester Hours (open to all student, faculty, staff and alumni with a vaild Cairn ID):

  • Monday - Thursday: 7:30AM to 11:00PM
  • Friday: 7:30AM to 7:00PM
  • Saturday: 12:00PM to 6:00PM
  • Sunday: 2:00PM to 11:00PM

Visitor Hours (an alumni without a valid Cairn ID is considered a visitor):

  • Monday - Friday: 8:00AM to 6:00PM
  • Saturday: 12:00PM to 6:00PM

Using Copiers in the Library

Two copiers are available for use in the library with the capability to scan and save or send via email. To print in color, you will need to use the copier located on the mezzanine level  To add funds to your card, see the directions below. To print without an ID you will need to obtain a visitor card from the front desk and pay once copies are made.

  • Each black & white print/copy is billed at 10 cents, and color prints/copies are 25 cents each
  • Double sided copies count for two pages.

Adding Funds to your Cairn Print Account

  • Follow this link (
  • Enter your Cairn username and password and click Login.
  • Click on Budget/Recharge button on the right hand side.
  • Click OK.
  • Choose the Amount you want to add and click on Next
  • Wait for the Paypal interface to load and login with your Paypal credentials.
  • Click to confirm payment and you are all set. The payment takes effect immediately.

University ID Card

The University now offers the purchase of an ID for the one-time fee of $25.00. The ID policy is designed to maintatin the security of campus, prevent unauthorized use of the facilities, and provide a safe and comfortable environment for the Cairn University community. More information on the Access/ID Policy can be found at: Please note, the information is in reference to the University Fitness Center and will be updated to include the Library in the near future. You do not need an ID to use the library during visitor hours or to check out books. Please be aware, without a University Alumni ID card, you will need to sign in at the front desk and adhere to the 

An alumni card:

  • Provides access to Masland Library during the regular semester hours
  • Provides access to the University Fitness Center

How to obtain an alumni ID card:

  • Complete the online ID Card Request
  • You should receive an email from Technology Services within 1 business day, indicating that your information has been updated.
  • If you did not prepay for your ID card online, please bring payment ($25) to the Business Services Office. Retain your receipt to present to Student Life personnel to authorize the creation of your ID card.
  • Visit the Office of Student Life (located in the Smith Administration Building) to take your photo. Identification cards are issued Monday–Friday 8:30 am to 4 pm.
  • You only need to sign a waiver if you plan to use the Fitness Center.  A waiver is not required to use the library.

The most frequent question from recent graduates of the university is how can I still access the library databases. Unfortunately, most license agreements restrict access to current students, faculty and staff. The library has been able to add alumni access to a few of the databases. Our most popular databases are ATLAS for alum and ProjectMuse.
