    • Abstract:
English: The Office of the Dead is a liturgical composition created around 800 (as additional Office for the Liturgy of the Hours), normally performed in Latin by the clergy in monasteries and churches. In the 19th and 20th centuries, however, it is surprisingly found in the traditional repertoire of the southeast Latvian population, in the native language, performed at home. It was introduced by the Jesuits to displace pagan rituals for the dead. Most of the time, the Jesuit text, written more than 200 years ago, is still used today, though only partially understood by the singers. The musical basis of the Office of the Dead is Catholic psalmody and Gregorian chant. This study deals with the changes of tradition in the 20th century caused by the political contexts of the Soviet era and the demographic situation of the late 20th century.
