This article presents an editorial on hospices and hospice care in the United States. What began as a grassroots movement in 1983 is a part of mainstream medicine but often misunderstood. It is not just for patients who are close to the end of life. Patients and physicians often fail to realize that hospice care at home is free in most cases through Medicare. Studies show that hospice care is under utilized and the author urges physicians to become more familiar with the service.
