The article focuses on common sleep disorders. Our physical and mental health, performance and quality of life are compromised by abnormal sleep. Yet patients may not identify a complaint as being associated with poor sleep, or as being a sign of a sleep disorder. There is a high prevalence of insufficient sleep among men in their 40s. Behaviourally induced insufficient sleep is voluntary and unintentional, with insidious consequences. Primary care practitioners should promote sufficient sleep, regular sleep schedules and good sleep hygiene.
