      Focuses on how the depictions of suffering by Jesus Christ stimulated compassion in people in the Middle Ages. Idea that people were obsessed with death because of poor health and lack of medical treatment, and that this was reflected in art; View that the compassion felt for Jesus spread toward the sick and dying in general, and eventually contributed to the development of modern health care; Discussion of sculptures, including the entombment of Christ in Chaource, France; Mention of the passion cult as a coping strategy for the perceived miseries of earthly life; Explanation of the dignified behavior in the entombment scenes that are based on Jesus' burial.
