    • Abstract:
      Born in Indian Territory, Alford was the grandson of the pantribal Indian leader Tecumseh. Educated in tribal customs until age twelve, he thereafter attended a mission school. In 1879, he earned a scholarship to Virginia’s Hampton Institute, where he adopted Christianity. Upon returning to Indian Territory, Alford initially was shunned by Indian traditionalists. Nevertheless, the following year, he was appointed principal of a federally funded Shawnee school, a position he occupied for five years. Alford, Thomas Wildcat
