    • Abstract:
Sociologist Robert Bellah first proposed the concept of an American civil religion in the late 1960s. Since that time, the concept has become highly influential in studies of the relationship between religion and politics in American society within a variety of academic fields, including religious studies, sociology, history, political science, anthropology, and psychology. Some scholars argue that the concept of American civil religion is either ethnocentric (by centering too heavily on Christianity in an era of increasing religious diversity), too vague and generalized, or too subjective to be of any significant scholarly use for social analysis.
