    • Abstract:
Media effects are the changes to the way an individual thinks, feels, or behaves as the result of his media consumption, which can mean anything from watching television to looking at an ad on the internet to playing video games. Since the early twentieth century, researchers have explored the way our media diets affect us, including both deliberate and nondeliberate changes. While most media effects research is as value-neutral as any other research in the social sciences, some studies and theories are made famous by appeals to morals, such as condemning comic books or violent video games because of the effects they may have on children. In recent decades, research has generally shown that the effects of media consumption are often subtle and can accumulate over time and that the ways conflicting effects interact with one another are especially complex.
