      (bap. Kulmain, April 3, 1781; d Colmar, April 18, 1854). German organist and composer . He trained as a musician in various Bavarian monasteries, met Abbé Vogler in 1803, and studied with Michael Haydn in Salzburg (1803–4). From 1806 he was active as a musician at the monasteries of Einsiedeln, St Trudpert, Mariastein and St Urban, and briefly in Eschenzweiler in Alsace. In 1812 Vogt became organist at Arlesheim Cathedral. He was appointed music director and cathedral organist of St Gallen in 1823, and occupied the same posts at the cathedral of St Martin in Colmar from 1837 to his death. Over 300 of his compositions have been preserved, and a number appeared in print, usually published by Vogt himself and seldom dated. His organ works, character pieces for divine service that are typical of their time in their melodious and pleasing style, were written not later than his time in St Gallen. His masses and other sacred vocal works were very much to the taste of his time and had quite a wide distribution. However, he is remembered less by his compositions than by an autobiography published shortly before his death, which contains a wealth of anecdotes....
