      The article discusses the selected ecclesiastical offices and functions of the laity in the diocesan tribunal of first instance in the 1983 Code of Canon law. Topics discussed include the description and constitutive elements of an ecclesiastical office articulated in the 1917 code, the conciliar teachings which affected significant development from the 1917 code, and the revised code which reflects the expanded description of ecclesiastical office.
