    • Abstract:
For decades the Alabama Student Company was one of the most well-known performing groups of the University in Potchefstroom (currently known as part of the North-West University). Each year this group toured the country. Since 1967 "revue programmes" were presented, which consisted of songs, accompanied by a band and alternated with comic skits. Choreography and special costumes made the presentation more spectacular and entertaining. The revue format was very popular with audiences. Long playing records and TV shows introduced Alabama to a wider audience, which improved ticket sales for performances. The Alabama productions, expressing vivacious student jollity, drew many talented students who wanted to join as members of this Student Company. Many schools and other tertiary institutions founded similar groups, but not one existed as long as Alabama. The university used Alabama extensively as a marketing instrument. Escalating costs and waning interest among students caused the company to be disbanded after their last production in 2007. This article provides a brief history of the Alabama Student Company, an analysis of the causes of its initial success and popularity and its eventual demise. Its artistic and other contributions are evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
    • Abstract:
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
