      An essay is presented that examines the effect of cross-cultural encounters within the field of modern calligraphy art in China from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. Also cited are the modernization (xiandaihua), academization (xueshuhua), and purposeful purification (chunhua) of the arts in the country, the works of the wenren scholar-artists, and the works of such artists as Chinese calligrapher Wang Dongling, and American digital artist Roman Verostko.
