The article discusses the collective memory of the Confederate States of America within the context of the debate surrounding the lowering of the Confederate battle flag in South Carolina, including in regard to the Confederates' efforts to preserve slavery. An overview of the social aspects of the monuments and statues in the U.S. Southern States that commemorate the Confederates States' role in the U.S. Civil War is provided.
