    • Abstract:
If one has attended a Time Manager course run by Time Manager International or one of its associate companies, one will be familiar with the principle of "The First Four Minutes". Apparently, the first few minutes are very important in any interaction; what happens between two people in terms of strokes, words and body language in the first four minutes is vital, both in terms of initial impressions and the outcome of the subsequent communication. Most delegates arriving on a course show signs of discomfort (perhaps awkwardness) and uncertainty (possibly anxiety). Participants are asked to reflect on other training events they have attended and to concentrate on behaviours, which helped them to learn, and those which hindered, classified under the headings of other participants and trainers. There are also very few trainers who do not feel at least a little apprehensive when starting a course; however familiar the content, however many times he⁄she has run the event, there is still the big unknown -- the group. Successful learning outcomes are so dependent on interactions that good relationships are vital and must be established early. Establishing rapport in the first 40 minutes is of prime importance.
