    • Abstract:
      This article examines new research into the flow of water through pipes. Turn a faucet from low to high, and the initially smooth, clear flow of water breaks and goes cloudy without warning. A group led by researchers from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has done just that, by shining a laser across a turbulent flow and using cameras to track microscopic tracer beads in the water. The beads outlined vortices that pushed sluggish water to the center of the pipe, creating a slow-moving streak down the center and fast-moving streaks around it--the predicted eddies.
