      Reports that an investigation conducted by Martha Goodway of the Smithsonian Institution have found that harpsichord strings dating from the 17th century and 18th century were made not of steel but of an alloy of iron and phosphorus, an element generally regarded as an unwanted impurity. Evidence showing that scraps of strings analyzed consisted mostly of iron having no detectable traces of carbon but a high level of phosphorus; Factor that led to the use of such strings.
